ABSTRACT
Summary: Military deception is the core of achieving an intangible advantage over the adversary. One of its methods is operational camouflage, which uses, among other things, dummy military objects and equipment as a means of decoy to deceive the opponent. This phenomenon has been around since ancient times, and contemporary examples of the use of military dummies could be seen during the Gulf Wars. Ukraine has also been using such approaches since the full-scale Russian aggression. Ukrainian forces are likely to use mainly dummy units imitating artillery assets, air and missile defence systems and radar systems. Thus, they effectively mislead the Russians, who use much more expensive resources to eliminate fake objects. Purpose and research methods: The aim of the research is to identify the types, used by the Ukrainian side, of dummy military objects and equipment. Theoretical research methods based on the analysis of the literature on the subject and available internet sources were used to conduct the research. The analysed material was then subjected to synthesis and abstraction, followed by inference and deduction in order to systematise the existing knowledge. Conclusions / recommendations: Analysing the current war in Ukraine, it can be concluded that the use of dummies as a means of decoying continues to be an effective tool for military deception. Presumably, artillery, air and missile defence systems, and radar systems are the most common and numerous simulated assets. The Ukrainian experience with the use of fake military objects and equipment, which has been collected and described, can also provide valuable guidance for Poland. It is reasonable to resume or continue work on the acquisition and strengthening of capabilities for the decoying of fake military objects and equipment by the Polish Armed Forces.
